Two dozen veterans attended history classes and joined school-wide assemblies Monday at Airport High School as part of the History Channel’s Take a Veteran to School Day program, in advance of Veterans Day.

Area service members visited classrooms and shared stories about their military experiences with students, then enjoyed a brunch before heading to assemblies. The school’s band and honor choir members performed, as did Airport’s award-winning JROTC team.

State Rep. Micah Caskey and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rep. James Smith shared stories of their military service during a moderated panel discussion, and all branches of the military and service members at the event were recognized.

Take a Veteran to School Day is an initiative of the History Channel to connect young people with veterans to hear their stories about military service. The History Channel program is in partnership with Spectrum Charter Communications. Airport is one of more than 40 U.S. schools chosen to participate.

More than 1,400 students, educators and community leaders attended the Airport event, the first in a number of activities planned in Lexington Two schools this week to recognize Veterans Day, which is Nov. 11.
