Teen mimicked Lexington County overpass jumpers, dies

Response to I-26 overpass jumper in June.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who died Monday night as a result of jumping off of the Westmore Drive overpass at I-277, Columbia.  The incident occurred around 6 p.m.

Destiny Crystal Cross, 17, of Humphrey Drive, Columbia, died at the scene.  An autopsy indicated the cause of death to be due to blunt force trauma to the head as a result of the fall.

In May Lexington Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of Augusta Road at I-20 where a male dressed in all black  jumped from the overpass and landed in the construction area below between the interstate traffic lanes. He was taken to the hospital.

In June,  I-26 at Piney Grove Road was was blocked as several emergency crews responded to a person jumping from the Piney Grove Road overpass into the westbound lanes of I-26. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded.

The person who jumped was transported for further medical treatment at a local hospital. LCSD Photo
