Storm causes power outage, damage to homes in Lexington County

A tornado warning was issued for Lexington County, at one point. A tornado watch remained in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday after a severe thunderstorm raged through – causing power outages.

On Monday morning some were still without power. Some homes had sustained severe damage from the storm. One house in West Columbia looked to be totally destroyed.

Gusts of high wind- more than 70 mph- were reported by the National Weather Service in Columbia (based at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in Cayce)  just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday

SCE&G reported more than 21,000 customers without power in Lexington County and more than 12,000 without power in Richland County.

The S.C. Highway Patrol reported trees fallen and power lines down  in Richland and Lexington counties.
