Sen. John Courson has been indicted, according to a Charleston newspaper. Courson represents Dist. 20 in the S.C. Senate. His district covers parts of Lexington County, along with Richland County.
The Post and Courier, of Charleston reported late Thursday night that the Republican, 72, who was elected in 1985, had been indicted.
According to the newspaper he was indicted for converting campaign funds for personal use and misconduct in office.
Courson’s attorney issued a statement Thursday night saying the allegations are false and Courson will fight the charges.
Courson’s indictment is expected to be announced publicly by justice officials on Friday, according to the newspaper.
He was elected to the Senate in 1985 according to the S.C. Senate’s official website.
