The new Girl Scouts Mountains to Midlands Urban Leadership Center at 1101 Williams St. in Columbia will be named in honor of Columbia businesswoman Cathy Novinger.
The Vista location of the center will be across from the State Museum. The The 30,000 sq.-ft. brick building will be completely renovated.
Novinger died in November after a long battle with cancer. She held a senior executive position with SCANA, was well-known as a Midlands businesswoman. She headed up the Palmetto Agribusiness Council and she was involved in numerous civic activities in Columbia, Cayce, West Columbia and across the Midlands. The offices of her and her husband, Bob, are on Meeting Street in West Columbia. just blocks from where the center that bears her name is planned.
“Cathy Novinger exemplified the leadership traits of a Girl Scout. She shared our DNA. She was a Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader, and the girls of South Carolina will learn to lead through her legacy,” were the words written about her in a Girl Scouts press release from Karen Kelly Girl Scouts Communications Director.
