3-year-old and mother killed in Lexington County crash

Two people were killed in a Lexington County vehicle crash, Friday morning. The collision involved a Nissan and a Freightliner truck.

Mesia Alonda Johnson, 32, of Leesville was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries from the collision. Cavon Cannon, 3, was taken to a local hospital where he died from the injuries he received in the accident.  Cannon was Johnson’s son and he was the only passenger in the vehicle.

The collision happened just after 9 a.m. in West Columbia, on Old Dunbar Road near the intersection of Kinsler Drive.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Nissan was traveling east on Old Dunbar Road when it crossed the center lane and hit the  Freightliner truck head-on.

Johnson, who was driving, was wearing a seatbelt according to the SCHP. She was entrapped in the car. Cannon was not restrained.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the collision.

The crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
